Rossendale Leader Highlights Summer Progress and Community Spirit
Rossendale Leader Highlights Summer Progress

Council Leader Alyson Barnes reflects on the recent sunny weather and the positive impact it has had on Rossendale. She notes how the sunshine has brought the community together, with town centres buzzing and residents enjoying catch-ups while running errands. The good weather has also showcased the success of regeneration projects, particularly in Haslingden, where improvements are now clearly visible. Barnes looks forward to upcoming events in the town.

Market Developments Across the Valley

Rawtenstall Market has experienced busy weekends, with strong support from shoppers. In Bacup, plans for a new market have been approved, with visible progress expected on site this summer. Barnes addresses the temporary market in Rawtenstall, explaining that it was always intended as a temporary home while the original 120-year-old market undergoes essential renovations. Caseys are making good progress, and traders are expected to return to a renewed space that benefits the entire town centre.

Community Pride and Upcoming Events

Barnes praises the Civic Pride volunteers for their efforts in keeping Rossendale looking beautiful. She encourages residents to consider joining them. Upcoming events include the Friends Meeting House Open Garden Event in Crawshawbooth on July 25 and 26. Local groups are preparing for a busy summer, and Barnes urges residents to show their support.

Rossendale Works Wellbeing and Employment Event

A recent highlight was the Rossendale Works Wellbeing and Employment Event at Futures Park, which brought together around 140 residents, 20 new sign-ups, and 25 partner organisations. The programme focuses on breaking down barriers, connecting people with opportunities, and building confidence to help residents move closer to employment. Barnes emphasises the importance of collaboration and putting people at the centre of services.

Listening to Young Residents

Barnes highlights the importance of involving young people in planning for the future. The council has worked with pupils from Haslingden High and BRGS, and more recently with young people at the Youth Zone, to gather their ideas. Their voices are being heard in future planning decisions.

Elections and Leisure Review Explained

Barnes explains that Rossendale does not have elections this year due to a boundary review that moved the borough to whole-council elections every four years. This change allows for longer-term planning and cost savings. The new ward arrangements took effect from May 2024. Regarding the leisure review, Barnes states it was undertaken to ensure facilities are sustainable ahead of Local Government Reorganisation. The aim is to protect leisure in the Valley for the long term, especially after the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Food Waste Scheme Success

Barnes thanks residents for embracing the new food waste scheme, which has received positive feedback. She encourages continued community involvement and neighbourly support, praising the community spirit that makes Rossendale special.

Barnes concludes by expressing pride in the Valley and invites residents to contact her by phone at 07817 414248 or by email at alysonbarnes@rossendalebc.gov.uk.
