School Council Debate Erupts at Brentwood Council Chamber Visit
School Council Debate at Brentwood Council Chamber

A lively debate unfolded when young councillors took their seats in the Brentwood Council chamber. Members of Hogarth Primary School's school council paid a visit to the council chamber, invited by Mayor Councillor Jay Laplain. The 12 pupils, from Years 2 to 6, engaged in a spirited debate on the question: "Should pupils have to wear school uniform?"

Formal Procedures

Before speaking, each pupil formally greeted the mayor and introduced themselves, mirroring the protocol followed by councillors in official meetings. This hands-on experience gave them a real taste of local governance.

Pupils' Enthusiasm

Deputy headteacher Lauren King praised the pupils: "Our school councillors asked the most brilliant questions. They wanted to know what the coat of arms meant and what the mayor is most proud of since taking up his role. It was fantastic as it showed the knowledge we teach at school is really sticking. At times, our pupils were telling the mayor facts about the council he didn't know!"

One pupil raised a local issue affecting her neighbourhood, prompting the mayor to advise her to write to the council. Others spoke passionately about litter picking and expressed their upset over certain areas in Brentwood. King added: "They were so passionate about it. It has given them that sense of ownership and taking responsibility for their local community. Our pupils were fantastic advocates for the school and the wider community. We were so proud of them. They had a really lovely time."
