MP: Government blocks historic pubs protection bill

Mike Wood, MP for Kingswinford and South Staffordshire, has said the Labour Government prevented his Heritage Public Houses Bill from progressing to a vote in Parliament on October 16. The Bill, inspired by the destruction of the Crooked House in Himley in August 2023, aimed to strengthen protections for historic pubs against speculative purchases, secretive sales, and demolition.

Government accused of falling short on pub protections

Mr Wood said he had offered to work with the Government across party lines to address gaps in existing planning and heritage legislation. He described the Government's actions as falling "well short of the mark," noting that Labour MPs were lined up to speak against the Bill until there was insufficient time for it to proceed, before the Government voted to ensure no vote on its merits could take place.

During the debate, Labour MPs argued that existing protections were sufficient and listed pubs in their own constituencies they considered worth protecting. Mr Wood countered that many of these pubs enjoy no greater protection than the Crooked House did before it was sold and destroyed. He said the vulnerability of many treasured historic pubs is evidence that current protections are not enough, and he remains determined to close these gaps before more heritage is lost.

Older People's Information Fair returns to Wordsley

Mr Wood also announced the return of his annual Older People's Information Fair, taking place at Richardson Hall in Wordsley on November 20 from 10am. Entry is free, with complimentary refreshments provided. The fair will bring together local and national organisations offering older residents information, advice, and support on topics including tackling loneliness, maintaining health and wellbeing in later life, and protecting themselves from fraud and scams.

There is no need to book; attendees can simply turn up on the day. Mr Wood will also send personal invitations to more than 3,000 constituents in Kingswinford, Wall Heath, and Wordsley.

Parking fines at local hospitals under scrutiny

Finally, Mr Wood said several constituents have contacted him about receiving parking fines at local hospitals, particularly Russells Hall Hospital in Dudley. He is asking anyone who believes they have received a parking fine incorrectly to share their experience so he can raise concerns and campaign for change on the issue. He said further updates will follow.
