The Department for Work and Pensions has confirmed that nine benefit payments will be rescheduled in August 2026 due to the summer bank holiday in England. The bank holiday falls on Monday, August 31, 2026, prompting the DWP to make payments earlier so claimants receive their money before the holiday.
Which Benefits Are Affected?
The nine benefits affected are Attendance Allowance, Carer's Allowance, Employment Support Allowance (ESA), Income Support, Jobseeker's Allowance (JSA), Pension Credit, Personal Independence Payment (PIP), State Pension, and Universal Credit. These benefits are administered by the DWP, while some benefits have been devolved to Social Security Scotland.
Payment Date Change Details
Payments normally due on Monday, August 31, will instead be paid on Friday, August 29, 2026. This means claimants will receive their money two days earlier than usual. The DWP states: "If your payment date is on a weekend or a bank holiday you’ll usually be paid on the working day before."
Social Security Scotland also confirmed that bank holidays can be created by royal prerogative, and benefits are typically paid directly into bank, building society, or credit union accounts. Claimants who have difficulties managing an account may arrange alternative payment methods.
Impact on Claimants
While early payment may seem beneficial, it means claimants must budget carefully to make their money last longer until the next payment. The August bank holiday is the last before the Christmas period, which includes two bank holidays: December 25 and December 28 (Boxing Day substitute).
In Scotland, the summer bank holiday is on August 3, but the August 31 bank holiday also affects Scottish claimants because it is a UK-wide holiday for certain benefits. Scottish bank holidays follow the same rules: if a holiday falls on a weekend, a weekday substitute is designated.
