Young runners from Brentwood experienced the thrill of the world-famous London Marathon weekend as they took part in the Mini London Marathon. A group of 12 pupils from Years 3, 4, and 5 at Hogarth Primary School in Brentwood were among the selected groups to secure a place in the event. Held the day before the main marathon, the Mini London Marathon gives children the opportunity to cross the iconic finish line after running 2.6 kilometers through the capital.
A Fantastic Day for Young Athletes
Deputy headteacher Lauren King, who herself hopes to run the London Marathon next year, described the day as absolutely fantastic for the school's keen runners. She emphasized the positive impact on the entire school, creating a real buzz and providing children with as many opportunities as possible. King stated, "For them to be able to do these things is incredible. The London Marathon is arguably the biggest marathon in the world. To be able to get involved in this way is just so special."
Building on Junior Parkrun Experience
The school has previously participated in junior parkrun, and the Mini London Marathon represents a step forward from that. King noted that the school is always looking for sporting events that are a little different for pupils to get involved with. She highlighted that running can be for everyone, and while the children do not have to become marathon runners after this, the experience can spark a passion for an activity they can enjoy with their family for free.
