The British 800m duo of Max Burgin and Alex Botterill both progressed to the next round at the Birmingham 2026 Commonwealth Games after a record-breaking morning session on the track.
Record-Breaking Morning at Alexander Stadium
The morning session at Alexander Stadium saw two Commonwealth Games records fall in the men's and women's 800m heats. Burgin, who is the British record holder over the distance, cruised through his heat in a time of 1:44.80, while Botterill, a relative newcomer to the international scene, also advanced with a time of 1:46.49.
Both athletes spoke of their satisfaction with their performances, having navigated the tricky conditions of an early-morning start. The heats were run in warm and humid conditions, which added an extra layer of difficulty to the qualifying rounds.
Burgin and Botterill Advance in Style
Burgin, who has been tipped as a medal contender for the Games, looked comfortable throughout his heat, leading from the front and crossing the line with a clear margin. His time was the fastest of the morning session, and he expressed confidence in his preparations for the semi-finals.
Botterill, meanwhile, had to work harder to secure his place in the next round, finishing second in his heat behind a strong Kenyan runner. However, his time was still well within the qualifying standard, and he said he was pleased to have made it through to the semi-finals at his first major championship.
Looking Ahead to the Semi-Finals
Both athletes will now turn their attention to the semi-finals, which are scheduled to take place later in the week. Burgin, who holds a personal best of 1:43.82, will be hoping to improve on that mark and secure a place in the final. Botterill, whose personal best stands at 1:45.91, will be aiming to continue his impressive form.
The British duo's progress is a positive sign for the home nation, which is hoping for a strong showing in the athletics programme at the Games. With the semi-finals set to be even more competitive, both athletes will need to be at their best to reach the podium.
