In a race that was expected to be a formality for Hodgkinson, the drama unfolded when her closest challenger, Ethiopia's Diribe Welteji, tripped and fell on the final lap. Welteji, who had been running strongly, lost her footing and crashed to the track, allowing the rest of the field to pass her. She eventually finished well down the order and failed to qualify automatically, though she could still advance as a fastest loser.
