The North Downs 50 Ultra Challenge returned to Guildford, drawing over 1,000 participants to the scenic trails of the Surrey Hills. The event combined personal achievement, fundraising, and record-breaking performances, with participants raising more than £150,000 for charities and community organisations.
Routes and participation
Participants walked, jogged, or ran distances of 10km, 25km, or the full 50km along sections of the North Downs Way. The route passed through rolling countryside, ancient woodland, and some of Surrey's most iconic landscapes, offering a memorable day out for all involved.
The challenge was designed to be accessible rather than purely competitive, encouraging participants to tackle the route at their own pace. Supported by rest stops, hot food, welfare teams, and hundreds of fellow Challengers, the event welcomed people of all ages and abilities. Many took on their first endurance event, while others returned as seasoned Challengers.
Record-breaking performances
Among the fastest finishers over the full 50km distance, Joe Turner crossed the line first in a course-record time of 3:24:21. Katherine Wood was the first female finisher, completing the course in 4:06:17 and smashing the female record.
The event also celebrated two members of what organisers describe as 'Ultra Challenge Royalty'. Peter Florence completed his 97th Ultra Challenge event, continuing a remarkable run of endurance achievements and moving ever closer to the milestone of 100 Challenges.
Remarkable endurance records
Roger Cross added another finish to an extraordinary Ultra Challenge record. He has now completed more than 5,200km across Ultra Challenge events, having taken part in 63 challenges, almost exclusively choosing the longest distances available.
The North Downs 50 is part of the Ultra Challenge Series, which encourages people of all fitness levels to get active, explore the outdoors, and achieve goals they may never have thought possible. To sign up for 2027's Ultra Challenge events, visit www.ultrachallenge.com.
