Caerphilly Launches Inclusive Disability Leisure Sessions for February Half Term
Caerphilly's February Half Term Disability Sessions

A comprehensive programme of disability-focused leisure and play sessions will be available across the Caerphilly area throughout the upcoming February half term break. This initiative provides accessible opportunities for children and young people with disabilities to engage in physical activity, play, and social interaction within safe, supportive, and welcoming environments.

Dedicated Leisure and Play Sessions

The programme integrates specialised Leisure Lifestyle pool sessions with inclusive Caerphilly Play sessions, all managed by trained staff and experienced playworkers. These professionals are dedicated to creating calm, inclusive spaces that cater specifically to the needs of families with disabled children.

Neurodivergent Swimming Sessions

Specifically designed neurodivergent swimming sessions are offered as quieter swims. These sessions feature reduced noise levels and the deactivation of additional pool features, such as wave machines or loud music, to foster a calmer and more manageable environment for participants.

Inclusive Play Sessions

The Caerphilly Play disability sessions are inclusive, supportive play sessions led by qualified playworkers. Each session is thoughtfully designed around the individual needs and abilities of the attending children. It is a requirement that a parent or guardian remains present for the duration of these play sessions. Advance booking is essential and must be completed via the official Leisure Lifestyle mobile application.

Additional Supported Swimming

Further disability swimming sessions are supported at select leisure centres through partnerships with external providers. These sessions are delivered independently and may therefore vary in their specific format, structure, and the level of support provided. Families are advised to contact these providers directly to obtain detailed information and confirm session specifics.

Council Commitment to Inclusivity

Chris Morgan, the cabinet member for leisure, emphasised the council's dedication: “It is fundamentally important that our leisure and play services are welcoming and accessible to every member of our community. These dedicated disability sessions help to create supportive environments where children and young people feel comfortable and confident to participate in activities suited to them, while also giving families the assurance that they are being fully supported.”

This provision of inclusive disability sessions directly supports the objectives outlined in the council’s Sport and Active Recreation Strategy. The strategy focuses on systematically reducing barriers to participation and ensuring that all residents, regardless of ability, have equitable opportunities to enjoy the benefits of sport, physical activity, and play.
