Argentina made the request following England's 2-1 defeat to them in 1986, where Diego Maradona wore the darker blue colours. In that match, Maradona scored the 'Hand of God' and one of the best World Cup goals in the same game. England were in white with sky blue shorts at the Azteca Stadium in Mexico, just a few years after the Falklands War.
In 1998, Argentina again advanced at England's expense in France, with a 2-2 draw in the round of 16 culminating in a penalty shoot-out win. During that game, England's David Beckham – in all-white – was sent off.

England's World Cup victory over Argentina in 2002 came when the Three Lions were wearing red, and Argentina their iconic sky blue and white striped jerseys. On Wednesday night, after Argentina's request, England will once again be kitted out in all-white, as they were against Norway earlier in the tournament.

Ahead of the clash, the Atlanta Police Department issued a statement: 'As Atlanta prepares to host an upcoming Fifa World Cup semi-final match and welcomes increased numbers of residents and visitors, the Atlanta Police Department has enhanced its citywide public safety and security posture.'
They added: 'Additional personnel and resources are already deployed and will continue to be strategically assigned in and around the event venues, entertainment districts, and other high-traffic areas to help ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone. These proactive measures are designed to protect the public, deter criminal activity, and ensure residents and visitors can safely enjoy this historic event.'
