Bayern Munich sporting director Max Eberl has cast serious doubt over Joao Palhinha's proposed move to Aston Villa, stating that a loan agreement is unlikely unless it includes an obligation to buy.
The Portuguese midfielder has been identified by Villa as a target to provide cover for the injured Amadou Onana, but only on a loan basis. However, Bayern are looking to sell Palhinha permanently this summer, and any loan deal for next season would need to include a mandatory purchase clause.
Eberl's Stance on Palhinha
Speaking to the media, Eberl confirmed that Villa had made contact but dismissed the likelihood of a deal. "I had read that Aston Villa contacted us about Joao, and that's correct," Eberl said. "But we won't reach an agreement with Aston Villa. It simply won't work, because we're not in a position where we have to do everything that others demand of us."
He added: "There's an overall situation; there are three parties that have to come to an agreement." This suggests that any potential transfer would require consensus between Bayern, Villa, and the player, with Bayern holding firm on their valuation and terms.
Newcastle United's Interest
According to Spanish outlet Marca, Newcastle United have made an offer to Palhinha in the form of a three-year contract. This development could further complicate Villa's pursuit, as the midfielder may have other options on the table.
Meanwhile, Villa are expected to complete the signing of left-back Matteo Ruggeri from Atletico Madrid, as they continue to strengthen their squad under Unai Emery.
Villa's Pre-Season and Upcoming Fixtures
Unai Emery's side will conclude their pre-season preparations on Saturday with a friendly against Borussia Mönchengladbach in Germany. Following that, they will face Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Super Cup final on Wednesday, August 12, in Austria. The match will be broadcast live on TNT Sports, available via HBO Max or Prime Video's HBO Max channel.
As the transfer window progresses, Villa may need to explore alternative targets to bolster their midfield, given Bayern's reluctance to agree to a loan without a permanent commitment.
