Birmingham City manager Chris Davies has revealed he is targeting up to three new players before the transfer window closes, and hinted that a new signing could be announced before Saturday's clash with Sheffield United. The Blues have already brought in five players this window but are still looking to strengthen in midfield and attack.
Midfield and forward targets identified
Davies confirmed the club is pursuing a midfielder and two forwards, including a left-winger following Ibrahim Osman's return to Brighton after a successful loan spell. BirminghamLive reported on Thursday morning that Bristol City's Max Bird has emerged as a target for the midfield vacancy.
Speaking at his press conference on Thursday afternoon, Davies was coy on specific names but suggested a deal is close. "We're hoping to finish off these next two-and-a-half weeks with two or three players coming to us, maybe two or three will look to move on if we can't guarantee the game time they would like," he said.
New signing expected imminently
"Hopefully in the next day or so we can add in an area, then we're just looking for the right piece or two to give us a push," Davies added. The manager's comments indicate that an announcement could come before the weekend, with the team preparing to face Sheffield United on Saturday.
Another player understood to have been on Blues' radar is Leeds United forward Joe Gelhardt. The 24-year-old has spent the last 18 months on loan at Hull City, where he scored 15 goals last season to help the Tigers win promotion to the Premier League.
Gelhardt speculation addressed
There were initial doubts over whether Hull would sign Gelhardt permanently, which briefly opened the door for Birmingham City. However, Hull have now made their move and appear set to complete a deal. Asked about Gelhardt, Davies commented: "I know there's been a lot of speculation but it will become clearer in time. He certainly had a great season last season and there will be a lot of teams interested in Joe for what he's done, but we focus on what we've got here and trying to make sure we start the league season well."
With the transfer window closing in two-and-a-half weeks, Davies is keen to finalise his squad. The potential departures of players seeking more game time could also shape the club's remaining business. The immediate focus remains on Saturday's match, but the coming days could bring significant movement at St Andrew's.
