Birmingham City are in talks to re-sign James Beadle on loan from Brighton & Hove Albion, BirminghamLive understands. The 21-year-old goalkeeper spent last season on loan with Blues, making 38 appearances across all competitions, including 35 starts in the Championship. A second stint at St Andrew’s @ Knighthead Park is now on the cards.
Beadle's Impressive Record
The 6ft 7in stopper kept eight clean sheets in the Championship for Blues last term after replacing Ryan Allsop between the sticks in early October. Beadle, an England under-21 international, has already accumulated 131 senior appearances in his career, including 92 in the Championship. He is expected to undertake another Championship loan after previous stints with Sheffield Wednesday and Blues in the last three campaigns.
Blues Urgently Need Goalkeeper
Blues have started pre-season with only one experienced goalkeeper, and head coach Chris Davies has sought to strengthen the position as a matter of urgency. In an interview with BirminghamLive on Thursday, Davies candidly admitted that the club were exploring loans and free agents this summer, with the intent of spending their money to recruit attacking talent.
Davies said: “What we’ve done in that area is try to take a step back, look at everything that’s out there in terms of availability and affordability. Are we going to have money to invest? It’s probably going to be more needed at the top end of the pitch. We’re more budgeting for a free or a loan in the goalkeeper position this season.”
Focus on Attacking Recruits
With Beadle’s potential return, Blues would secure a proven Championship goalkeeper without a transfer fee, allowing them to allocate funds to bolster their attacking options. The club’s strategy under Davies is clear: prioritize spending on forwards while relying on loan deals for goalkeeping depth.
