Boxer Ryan Robinson Wins Professional Debut After Overcoming Injuries
Boxer Ryan Robinson Wins Professional Debut

Super lightweight boxer Ryan Robinson, 32, secured a victory in his professional debut against Sheffield's Owen Durnan at an open-air event held at Batley Bulldogs Stadium. The bout was organised by Leeds promoter Mark Bateson alongside York boxing figure Henry Wharton.

From Amateur to Professional

Robinson began boxing at age 14 and took up mixed martial arts three years later. He later co-founded the Yorkshire Gladiators gym in Pontefract with his twin brother Jay. His path to the professional ranks was delayed by the global pandemic and a broken leg, but he remained focused on setting a positive example for his two young daughters.

Intensive Training Camp

Preparation for the fight lasted 17 weeks at the Golden Team gym in Leeds under head coach Padraig McDonagh. Robinson said: “What an experience. Just about the best night of my life as a boxer and athlete, and I can’t wait to get back in there. I enjoyed everything about it and felt confident after my camp and stuck to the game plan devised with my coach Padraig McDonagh at Golden Team in Leeds.”

Areas for Improvement

Reflecting on his performance, Robinson acknowledged the need to maintain focus for longer periods. He stated: “I’m proud to have got the win, but frankly, there are things to work on. I need to stay sharper for longer as bouts get longer, and I got caught by some powerful body shots. But gaining the experience is the whole point of it.” He also praised his long-term coach, Neil Wain, for years of support.

Community and Sponsor Support

Five local businesses—ZMR, Braithwaite Contracting and Driveways, Matthews and Robinson, Players Cars, and Spencer Electrical Engineering—provided financial sponsorship for the training camp. Coach McDonagh commented: “Boxing’s quite tight-knit, and I was delighted when Ryan chose to be coached at Golden Team for his professional debut fight preparation. The camp as we call it. Ryan made enormous progress over the 17 weeks, especially in his mental outlook. Everyone is happy.”
