The Championship has descended into chaos since the regular season ended, with drama continuing to unfold even 11 days after the final matches. While Birmingham City boss Chris Davies and his players enjoy a break, other clubs are embroiled in controversy and managerial changes.
Spygate Scandal Erupts
The play-offs have gripped the nation, particularly the semi-final between Middlesbrough and Southampton. The first leg between Hull City and Millwall was a non-event, with Hull advancing to Wembley after a second-leg victory. However, the Middlesbrough-Southampton tie has dominated discussions for nearly a week.
Last Thursday, as Middlesbrough prepared for the first leg with a tactical session at their Rockcliffe training base, a man allegedly working as an analyst for Southampton was spotted watching from the bushes. This incident, dubbed 'Spygate II,' has sparked outrage.
Middlesbrough boss Kim Hellberg accused Southampton of 'trying to cheat' after the first leg ended in a draw. Southampton launched an internal review, and their manager Tonda Eckert refused to comment, walking out of his press conference at the Riverside. After Southampton won the second leg 2-1 in extra-time to reach the final, Eckert walked out again when asked directly, "Are you a cheat?"
Possible Punishments
Southampton now await the outcome of an Independent Disciplinary Commission after being charged by the EFL. Potential penalties include exclusion from the play-off final or a points deduction next season. Hellberg plans to continue training his players in case Middlesbrough replaces Southampton in the final.
In an emotional press conference, Hellberg expressed his frustration: "For a week or two weeks before this game, you put every second away from your family to watch Southampton... When that is taken away from you, it breaks my heart."
Managerial Carousel
Elsewhere, Blackburn Rovers are searching for a new manager after Michael O'Neill decided not to extend his stay. O'Neill guided Rovers to Championship safety but opted to focus on leading Northern Ireland towards the 2028 European Championships. He said, "After careful consideration, I have decided that my long-term focus must remain with Northern Ireland."
Bristol City and Watford are also looking for new managers, adding to the off-season upheaval.
