Coed Eva Football Club in Cwmbran, Torfaen, has officially opened its brand new £637,000 facilities ahead of the upcoming season, marking a significant milestone for the 46-year-old club. The investment, secured through a successful application last year, has delivered modern changing rooms and dugouts at their home ground.
Funding Breakdown and Support
The Cymru Football Foundation provided 70 per cent of the total funding, while Torfaen Council contributed the remaining 30 per cent by reinvesting developer contributions — funds paid by building companies to the local authority. This collaborative effort has enabled the club to upgrade essential infrastructure, including new fencing and an improved drainage system for the changing rooms.
Club Impact and Future Plans
Coed Eva FC currently has around 150 members across nine teams and relies on 27 dedicated local volunteers. The club is now seeking additional funding to improve the site's car park. Paul Bielski, chairman of Coed Eva FC, said: "Getting to this stage has been challenging but incredibly rewarding. We've already seen former players express an interest in returning after seeing the improvements, and there is real excitement about the club's future. We are extremely grateful to the Cymru Football Foundation, which provided 70 per cent of the funding required, and the council for providing additional financial support."
Strategic Local Football Plan
The official opening coincides with the publication of a new Local Football Facility Plan for Torfaen, developed by Continuum Sport & Leisure, the Football Association of Wales, Cymru Football Foundation, Torfaen Council, and local football clubs. Councillor Mandy Owen, executive member for the environment, added: "By reinvesting developer contributions locally, we have been able to deliver modern facilities that will benefit current and future generations of players, volunteers and residents. As part of our Torfaen Deal approach, we are committed to working alongside community organisations to help them take an active role in managing and improving local assets. Coed Eva AFC is a great example of how clubs can support the long-term sustainability of community facilities while creating opportunities for people to be active, connect with others and take pride in their local area."
