Harvey Elliott has opened up about his time at Aston Villa, describing the loan spell as one of the toughest periods of his career but one that ultimately proved crucial for his development. The Liverpool midfielder spent the 2021-22 season at Villa Park, making 18 appearances in all competitions, before returning to Anfield.
Difficult start at Villa Park
Elliott, now 20, admitted that adapting to Dean Smith's system was not straightforward. "It was a massive step up," he said. "I went from playing for Blackburn in the Championship to a Premier League club with huge expectations. I struggled at first to find my rhythm and confidence."
The loan was intended to give Elliott regular first-team football after his successful stint at Blackburn Rovers, where he scored seven goals in 41 games. However, at Aston Villa, he found game time limited and competition fierce.
A learning experience
Despite the challenges, Elliott emphasized the value of the experience. "I learned more about myself in those six months than I had in years. I had to deal with setbacks, work harder, and stay mentally strong. It was a reality check but exactly what I needed."
The midfielder credited the Villa coaching staff and teammates for supporting him. "The lads were brilliant, really helpful. I built friendships that last to this day."
Impact on current form
Elliott believes the loan helped him mature as a player. Since returning to Liverpool, he has become a regular under Jürgen Klopp, making 42 appearances last season and scoring three goals. "I'm a different player now. I'm more resilient, more aware of what it takes to play at the top level."
Liverpool's decision to send Elliott out on loan was vindicated, according to Klopp. "Harvey came back a better player. Sometimes you have to go through tough moments to grow. He did that at Aston Villa."
Looking forward
Elliott is now focused on helping Liverpool challenge for trophies. "That loan taught me that nothing comes easy. I want to repay the faith the club has shown in me." He also expressed gratitude to Aston Villa fans. "The support I received there was incredible. I'll always appreciate my time at Villa Park."
