Joao Gomes joins Aston Villa for £35m from Wolves

Aston Villa have completed the signing of midfielder Joao Gomes from Wolverhampton Wanderers for a fee of £35 million. The 25-year-old left Wolves' training camp in Portugal on Thursday to finalise the move across the West Midlands, as first reported by BirminghamLive.

Quick transfer following Tielemans departure

Villa moved swiftly to reach an agreement with Wolves after Youri Tielemans departed for Manchester United in a deal worth the same £35 million. Atletico Madrid had previously shown interest in Gomes, but a move to the Spanish capital had been off the table for the past month.

Gomes' arrival follows the signing of Johan Manzambi for a club-record £52 million. Villa are also targeting Joao Palhinha on loan to provide cover for the injured Amadou Onana, who is expected to miss most, if not all, of next season after suffering an ACL rupture.

Gomes' time at Wolves

Gomes joined Wolves from Flamengo in the summer of 2023, signing a five-and-a-half-year contract at Molineux. During his time at the club, he made 130 appearances in all competitions, scoring eight goals and providing six assists.

Last season, Gomes scored his only goal of the campaign in a 2-0 victory over Aston Villa in late February, helping Wolves to a memorable win over Unai Emery's side.
