Argentina goalkeeper Emi Martinez has expressed his excitement about facing some of his Aston Villa teammates when Argentina takes on England in the World Cup semi-finals on Wednesday night. Both teams advanced after extra-time victories in the quarter-finals, with Argentina overcoming Switzerland and England defeating Norway.
England's comeback victory
Jude Bellingham scored twice to complete England's comeback victory over Norway. Morgan Rogers played a key role in the winning goal as Orjan Nyland made a mess of saving the Villa star's effort from range.
Argentina's path to the semi-finals
Argentina was helped by Breel Embolo's dismissal after the Switzerland forward received a second yellow card for simulation in the 72nd minute. Julian Alvarez restored Argentina's lead in the second period of extra time before Lautaro Martinez sealed a 3-1 victory in the closing stages.
Players' reactions
After the win, Alvarez and Martinez both stopped in the mixed zone to discuss the upcoming semi-final against England. "England are a very strong team with some great players and lots of quality and depth," Alvarez explained, via the BBC. "But we will prepare ourselves to play a great game and reach the final."
"England have a deep squad. I know them very well and it's going to be nice to play against some of my (Villa) teammates," Martinez added.
What's at stake
The winner of the semi-final will face either France or Spain in the final at the MetLife Stadium next weekend.
