Former West Bromwich Albion midfielder James Morrison has urged the club to sign a new goalscorer in the January transfer window to strengthen their promotion bid. The Baggies currently sit in the Championship play-off places but have struggled for consistency in front of goal, scoring just 28 times in 21 league matches.
Morrison's assessment of West Brom's attacking needs
Morrison, who made 310 appearances for the club, believes adding a clinical finisher could be the difference between a top-six finish and automatic promotion. "They need someone who can put the ball in the net regularly," he told BirminghamWorld. "The team creates chances but hasn't been ruthless enough. A striker with 15-20 goals a season would transform them."
Current squad analysis
West Brom's top scorer this season is midfielder John Swift with seven goals, while strikers Brandon Thomas-Asante and Josh Maja have managed six and four respectively. The lack of a prolific centre-forward has been a recurring issue, with the club relying on goals from midfield and defence.
Transfer window strategy
Head coach Carlos Corberan is expected to target a striker in January, but financial constraints may limit options. Morrison stressed the importance of smart recruitment: "They don't need to spend millions, just find the right player who fits the system. Someone with experience in the Championship would be ideal."
Promotion race implications
With Leicester City and Ipswich Town setting the pace at the top, West Brom cannot afford to drop points. Morrison added: "The gap to the top two is manageable, but they need to start winning consistently. A new striker could give them the edge in tight games."
West Brom's next match is against Middlesbrough on Boxing Day, where they will look to close the gap on the automatic promotion places.
