The sale took place at Cuttlestones auction house in Wolverhampton, where the card was part of a larger collection of sports memorabilia. The auctioneers had estimated the card would sell for between £8,000 and £12,000, and it achieved the lower end of that estimate. The winning bid was placed by a private collector from the United Kingdom.
According to Cuttlestones' specialist, the card's rarity stems from the fact that it is one of only a few cards featuring both Messi and Ronaldo together, and it is also signed by both players. The autographs are authenticated by the Professional Sports Authenticator (PSA), a leading third-party grading service.
Growing market for football cards
The sale reflects a broader trend in the sports memorabilia market, where football cards have seen a surge in value in recent years. Similar cards featuring Messi and Ronaldo have sold for even higher amounts, with a 2014 Panini Prizm card of the pair selling for £15,000 in 2022.
"The market for high-end football cards is incredibly strong at the moment," said the auction specialist. "Collectors are willing to pay a premium for cards that feature the two greatest players of their generation, especially when they are autographed."

The sale has generated excitement among football card collectors, many of whom see such items as investments. The card was originally purchased by the seller for around £100, meaning it has increased in value by 100 times over the past decade.
