Aston Villa's 2026/27 season began with a nightmare 4-0 defeat at Brighton, as new signing Joao Gomes was sent off for violent conduct. The Seagulls scored four times in the first 31 minutes, leaving Unai Emery's side with a mountain to climb on the opening weekend.
Villa had the first couple of chances, but without a recognised striker, Emi Buendia missed a golden opportunity early on after Ross Barkley won the ball high up the pitch. That proved to be the closest Villa came to scoring, as Brighton then took control.
First-half collapse at the Amex
Brighton's opener came from a horror pass across the box by Pau Torres, allowing Max De Cuyper to win possession inside the area. His shot struck the post and went in off Victor Lindelof for an own goal. Georginio Rutter then assisted De Cuyper for Brighton's second in the 18th minute.
The Seagulls took the game away altogether with a quickfire double on the half-hour mark. Jack Hinshelwood headed in a third after Ian Maatsen was beaten at the back post, then scored his second after Joao Gomes was dispossessed by Yasin Ayari.
After a woeful first half, Villa became just the second team in Premier League history to concede four goals, receive a red card and score an own goal in the first half of a match. The only previous instance was Southampton vs Manchester United in February 2021.
Player ratings: who struggled most
Marco Bizot – 4: Beaten four times in 31 minutes, and Villa were lucky not to be five or six down by the break. Made a few decent stops in the second half.
Matty Cash – 4: Was at fault for what would have been a fifth goal late in the first half. Didn't do enough to stop the cross that led to Brighton's third.
Victor Lindelof – 4: De Cuyper ran off his shoulder too easily for Brighton's second, with the wing-back tapping in Rutter's cross.
Pau Torres – 3: Had a calamity early on, allowing De Cuyper to score after a terrible pass across the box. Soon after, he was caught out in the 23rd minute some 30 yards from goal, leading to a shot from Rutter. Didn't do enough to stop Rutter's cross for the second goal either.
Ian Maatsen – 4: Put a decent ball across the face of the box early on, but there were no takers – maybe a striker would have gobbled up the chance. He was dominated at the back post for Brighton's third.
Boubacar Kamara – 4: Difficult afternoon for every player, including Kamara, who was making his first Premier League appearance since the start of the year.
Joao Gomes – 2: Nightmare debut. After collecting an early booking, he gave the ball away for Brighton's fourth and was sent off for violent conduct. He drove forward with the ball a couple of times between Brighton's goals.
John McGinn – 5: Cleared the bar with an effort in the 16th minute, with possession presented to him by Gomes. Won five ground duels and played five passes into the final third.
Ross Barkley – 4: Playing in a free role with Villa lacking a centre-forward. He nabbed the ball high up early on to present Buendia with a big chance to score, but he didn't take it.
George Hemmings – 5: Made his first Premier League start, operating off the left. Difficult match for the teenager to make much of an influence in. Worked hard, tried his best, covering plenty of distance.
Emi Buendia – 5: Missed a golden opportunity to score early in the first half – who knows how the game would have panned out had he tucked it away. Got through plenty of work after Villa went down to 10.

Villa's next challenge will be to regroup after this heavy defeat, with questions over the squad's balance without a striker and the discipline that led to Gomes' red card. The result leaves Emery's side with an immediate test of character as the season gets underway.
