SSAFA Charity Golf Day at Top-Ranked Yelverton Course Seeks Players

The Plymouth branch of SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity, is extending a warm invitation to members of the public to participate in its highly anticipated annual golf day. This special event is set to take place at the prestigious Yelverton Golf Club on Friday, May 15, 2026, marking the sixth consecutive year of this successful fundraising initiative.

A Premier Golfing Experience

Yelverton Golf Club is renowned as one of the top 100 golf courses in England, boasting breathtaking panoramic views that stretch across the dramatic landscapes of Dartmoor and Cornwall. The moorland course, originally designed in 1904 by the esteemed architect Herbert Fowler, offers a rich heritage and has hosted numerous top-quality competitions over the decades.

The course ingeniously incorporates unique features such as old mine workings, leats (which are man-made watercourses or channels), and natural hazards. These elements combine to create a challenging yet inspiring layout that caters to golfers of all skill levels, from beginners to seasoned players.

Event Details and Format

The charity golf day is open to anyone aged 18 and over, with a total of 76 player slots available. Due to increasing popularity, these spots are filling up rapidly. Participants will be organized into mixed groups of four, playing off 18-hole handicaps. In a friendly and inclusive format, only the two best scores from each team will count towards the final tally.

Golfers with inactive handicaps are also warmly encouraged to join and enjoy the day. After a serene and scenic round of golf, all entrants will be treated to a delicious one-course meal at the clubhouse. The event will conclude with a traditional post-game raffle, featuring sought-after prizes such as four-ball vouchers for other esteemed golf clubs across Devon and Cornwall.

Supporting a Vital Cause

Colin Stockman, the event organizer and a dedicated caseworker for SSAFA in Plymouth, shared his enthusiasm for the day. "The golf day is always a tremendous amount of fun, and over the past five years, we have successfully raised more than £3,700 for SSAFA," he stated. "Playing on such a beautiful and historic course makes this an unmissable opportunity for people across Devon and Cornwall to get involved and support our cause."

He further explained, "Due to growing demand, we have increased our available tee slots from 12 to 19 this year, which is a fantastic indicator of the success and popularity of previous events." Colin emphasized the critical importance of the funds raised: "SSAFA exists to ensure that serving personnel, veterans, and their families never have to battle alone. As a caseworker, I witness firsthand the need within the Plymouth community. All donations from events like this go directly towards our mission, enabling us to continue providing life-changing support to those who have served our country."
