Tiago Fernandes, a 14-year-old from Hampshire, has emerged as one of English golf's brightest prospects after clinching the Douglas Johns Trophy at Harewood Downs Golf Club. The Wellow member, who already holds the Hampshire under-14 title, secured a one-shot victory with a two-under-par total over 36 holes, edging out a field of the country's top junior players.
A prestigious title with a rich legacy
The Douglas Johns Trophy has a storied history, with past champions including Justin Rose, who won in 1995 before becoming a US Open champion, Olympic gold medallist, and Ryder Cup star. Other notable winners include Oliver Fisher (2003), Marco Penge (2013), Alex Fitzpatrick (2014), and Kris Kim (2021), all of whom have advanced to the highest levels of the game. The championship is widely regarded as a launchpad for emerging talent, showcasing the next generation of golfing stars.
Fernandes entered the event as a strong contender, and his performance lived up to the billing. After the first round, Sebastian Mitchell (Royal Ascot) set the early pace with a one-under-par 68, despite dropping shots late in his round. Fernandes, however, produced an outstanding four-under 65 to take a one-shot lead into the final 18 holes.
A tight contest decided on the final day
With eight players clustered around par and within striking distance, the championship remained wide open heading into the afternoon. Will Furness (Ringway) delivered the round of the day, carding seven birdies and an eagle in a superb 63 to surge up the leaderboard. Fernandes, though, held his nerve with a composed two-over 71 in the second round, finishing one shot ahead of Furness, who took runner-up honours.
