Unai Emery Interrupts Reporter to Defend Jadon Sancho After Sunderland Errors
Aston Villa manager Unai Emery has firmly defended winger Jadon Sancho after the player's two late mistakes nearly cost his team victory against Sunderland at Villa Park. Sancho lost possession in the 86th and 87th minutes, leading to quick-fire goals from Trai Hume and Wilson Isidor that leveled the match at 3-3 in improbable fashion.
Emery Takes Responsibility, Refuses to Blame Sancho
When questioned about Sancho's role in Sunderland's comeback after the game, Emery cut off the reporter before they could finish. "It is not his mistake. The mistake is how we did this action," Emery insisted. "If we did more passes, we could have avoided it. The idea in 90 minutes was through good positioning and keeping possession, trying to be patient. When we conceded one goal, we decided to go quickly. I am never punishing it."
Emery emphasized that the collective team response was the issue, not Sancho's individual errors. "After the ball we lost, the players didn't respond well to protect the goals. We are going to analyse and find solutions for mistakes. I am always taking responsibility for the mistakes, not the players," he stated.
Dramatic Late Winner Secures Villa Victory
Despite the late collapse, Aston Villa managed to secure all three points with a dramatic winner in the 93rd minute. Goalkeeper Emi Martínez made a crucial save to deny Habib Diarra in added time, before Lucas Digne raced up the other end and crossed for Tammy Abraham to restore Villa's advantage, making the final score 4-3.
The match highlighted both Villa's attacking prowess and defensive vulnerabilities, with Sancho's errors putting his team under intense pressure. However, Emery's post-match comments made it clear he views the incidents as systemic failures rather than individual blame.
This result keeps Aston Villa in contention for European qualification, while Sunderland's valiant effort ultimately ended in defeat. The manager's defense of Sancho suggests the winger will retain his place in the team as Villa continue their Premier League campaign.
