John Eustace Leaps to Dion Sanderson's Defence After Birmingham City Criticism
John Eustace has strongly defended Dion Sanderson following criticism from Birmingham City fans, after the defender played a key role in Derby County's 1-0 victory over his former club. Sanderson marshalled Derby's defence to a clean sheet in the Championship clash at Pride Park, keeping Derby's play-off hopes alive while ending Birmingham's top-six aspirations.
Sanderson's Redemption at Derby County
The 26-year-old centre-back, who was deemed surplus to requirements by Birmingham manager Chris Davies last year, joined Derby County on a cheap deal in January. Sanderson had struggled during the 2023/24 season when Birmingham were relegated, and despite initially being given a reprieve by Davies, he quickly lost his place in League One and the manager's trust.
A glaring mistake in Birmingham's 1-1 draw with Northampton Town in November 2024 proved to be the final straw, leading to Sanderson being shipped out in January. After returning from a loan at Blackburn Rovers, he was excluded from Birmingham's first-team pre-season before Derby came calling in August.
Eustace's Strong Support for Sanderson
John Eustace, who signed Sanderson for a fourth different Championship club, has managed to get the best out of the defender. Sanderson has started 33 of Derby's 39 league games this season, helping the Rams to eighth place in the table.
"Dion in my opinion is a top character, a top person and he needs people to believe in him," Eustace said. "Where people might think he's not great with the ball, and that kind of stuff, the performances he's put in this season have been excellent and it's about winning games, it's about keeping clean sheets and it's about creating unity in the dressing room and he ticks all those boxes."
Eustace emphasized the importance of results over style, adding: "Before you get carried away about wanting to play certain ways and bringing in top players, it's about winning and over the course of the game Dion Sanderson certainly won't let you down and that's why we signed him."
Birmingham City's Season in Review
The victory at Pride Park highlighted the contrasting fortunes of the two clubs. While Derby kept their play-off dreams alive, Birmingham's interest in the top-six ended, prompting an inquest into their failure to seriously challenge for promotion.
