West Brom's James Morrison Stays Grounded Amid Championship Survival Push
West Bromwich Albion head coach James Morrison is refusing to get carried away as his team edges closer to securing Championship safety, highlighting the division's unpredictable nature. The Baggies secured a vital 2-0 victory at Preston on Saturday, moving them five points clear of the relegation zone with just three games remaining.
Unpredictable Championship Challenges
Morrison emphasized that the Championship can "throw surprises at you" and continues to test teams, even with the finish line in sight. He stated, "It's massive really, but I also know, in the back of my mind, that the Championship can throw surprises at you. It can keep testing you, and I won't forget that." This cautious approach comes despite the potential for safety to be mathematically secured with a win against Watford on Tuesday, depending on other results.
Points Deduction Uncertainty
A cloud of uncertainty remains due to a potential points deduction from an EFL charge for a financial breach. Morrison acknowledged this, saying, "I think this result will put it on the back-burner a little bit, but I've got no answers for that. We will just continue to do our job really of trying to get results, and then we've done our job really, because at the end of the day we haven't got any control over it."
Joyous Victory and Player Contributions
The win at Preston was celebrated by 4,000 traveling fans, with strikers Josh Maja and Daryl Dike scoring the goals. Dike's goal was particularly special, marking his first in nearly 12 months. Morrison described the emotional high after the match, noting, "I didn't really have to say too much after the game. I think I was full of emotions, an emotional high after kicking every ball. I just said to put the music on lads, enjoy it."
The team has since refocused, reviewing the game to identify areas for improvement as they aim to secure their Championship status in the final matches of the season.
