Jhon Solis: Transfer Clauses and Birmingham City's Big Hint on Permanent Deal
Colombian midfielder Jhon Solis has made a significant impact for Birmingham City since his arrival during the January transfer window. Signed on loan from Spanish club Girona to strengthen a midfield that was struggling in the Championship, Solis has provided much-needed physicality and defensive solidity for the Blues.
While his time at the club has not been without challenges, including a red card against Millwall that served as a learning experience, Solis has generally been a positive addition. Birmingham City manager Chris Davies has been vocal in his praise for the young player, highlighting his unique qualities in the league.
Manager's Assessment and Player Qualities
"There won't be many more physical sixes in the league," Davies stated emphatically. "He's a good size. When the game opens up a bit he can use his power."
The manager has been working closely with Solis to develop his game further, particularly focusing on maintaining quick play and forward movement. Davies believes the Colombian midfielder possesses all the essential qualities Birmingham needs, especially his willingness to engage in defensive work and his communication with teammates.
Davies specifically mentioned how well Solis has integrated with both Paik Seung-ho, who speaks Spanish, and Tomoki Iwata, demonstrating his adaptability within the squad structure.
Transfer Clauses and Permanent Deal Possibilities
Attention has now shifted to whether Solis might become a permanent fixture at Birmingham City. The original loan agreement with Girona was structured with future transfer possibilities in mind, including what the Spanish club described as "a mandatory purchase option based on objectives."
While promotion to the Premier League would have triggered an obligation-to-buy clause, that scenario is no longer possible this season. However, Solis himself confirmed in March that "there's a possibility I'll stay; it's a loan with an option-to-buy."
Reports suggest that a permanent deal could be activated if Solis makes 11 appearances for Birmingham City, though the specifics of what constitutes an "appearance" remain unclear. If the clause requires 45 minutes per match, Solis reached that threshold during Sunday's victory over Wrexham. Considering league games only, he currently stands at 10 appearances meeting that criteria.
Future Prospects and Financial Considerations
Regardless of the specific clause details, if Birmingham City wants to retain Solis, the 21-year-old Colombian is likely to remain at St Andrew's next season, as this was essentially the understanding when the loan was arranged in January.
When asked if Solis has done enough to justify a permanent transfer, Davies responded positively: "I think he has. I think he's shown that he's really built for this league."
The manager elaborated on Solis's attributes that make him valuable: "His physicality, he can play but he can do all the dirty parts as well – seconds balls, duels, winning tackles – and he's got pace and power."
Davies confirmed that discussions have taken place internally about squad planning for next season, and the club has been "really happy with what he's done." However, the final decision will depend on financial considerations and discussions that will take place after the season concludes.
The manager's position on Solis is clear and positive, leaving only the financial aspects to be resolved by the club's decision-makers. With his physical presence, defensive capabilities, and growing understanding of Championship football, Jhon Solis appears to have made a strong case for a permanent stay at Birmingham City.
