Lewis Koumas Finds Form at Hull City After Birmingham City Loan Ends
Liverpool recalled young attacker Lewis Koumas from his loan at Birmingham City in January and reallocated him to Championship promotion hopefuls Hull City, where he has quickly made an impact. Since joining the Tigers, Koumas has netted three goals in 11 league appearances, trebling his contribution from the first half of the season with Blues.
Confidence and Versatility Key to Koumas' Revival
Shortly after Birmingham City's FA Cup third round victory over Cambridge United in January, the 20-year-old Welsh international admitted to being 'a confidence player' - a rare public acknowledgment that highlighted his struggles during his time at St Andrew's. While Birmingham City manager Chris Davies used Koumas almost exclusively on the wings during his loan spell, Hull City manager Sergej Jakirovic has deployed him across the attacking third with notable success.
HullLive reporter Barry Cooper explains the tactical shift: "Sergej Jakirovic has played him right across the attacking third of the pitch. In games like Chelsea and Ipswich Town, he's been deployed up front, and in others like Wrexham away, he's played up alongside Oli McBurnie. Koumas has also played out wide and seems happy to be given the freedom that he has so far."
Different Approach Yields Different Results
While Koumas himself identifies left wing as his best position, his pace has seen him utilized through the middle for both Liverpool and Wales, with whom he still hopes to play at the upcoming World Cup. Hull City has capitalized on this versatility, with Cooper noting: "Given his pace, Jakirovic has looked to try to get him to stretch teams. He's direct, and in the closing stages of games when you're trying to see it out, that ability to go in behind is particularly useful."
The young attacker's three goals for Hull have showcased his diverse skill set, including a glancing header at Wrexham and a thumping volley against Derby County. This contrasts with his time at Birmingham City, where despite making his league debut centrally against Leicester City, he was subsequently confined to wide positions for the remainder of his loan spell.
Promising Future Despite Early Challenges
Cooper acknowledges that Koumas remains a work in progress: "He is what he is, a young player learning his trade in the most competitive league in the world. He's raw and makes mistakes, but he's clearly a player with some serious talent, and there's no doubt that he's been a worthwhile addition."
The reporter added that Koumas has made a tangible impact at Hull City: "His impact has been felt directly in terms of the points he's helped claim, and those could well prove crucial when the season ends." With Hull City pushing for promotion, Koumas' contributions could prove significant in the Championship run-in.
A brief spell at Birmingham City won't define a career still very much in its infancy, but Koumas will have an opportunity to prove some of his doubters wrong when Hull City faces Birmingham City at the MKM Stadium next month. The match represents not just another Championship fixture, but a personal benchmark for the young Liverpool loanee seeking to establish himself at this level.
