MP Sarah Coombes Speaks in Parliament on West Brom's Financial Charge

Labour MP Sarah Coombes has made a passionate plea in the House of Commons, urging the government to assist in reaching an urgent resolution to West Bromwich Albion's financial charge imposed by the English Football League. The West Bromwich MP addressed Parliament on Thursday morning, highlighting the club's recent plight and raising concerns with Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport Lisa Nandy.

Concerns Over Potential Points Deduction

Miss Coombes stated that Baggies supporters are "very concerned" about reports of a potential points deduction due to allegations of financial rule breaches. The club has strongly rejected these allegations, which are believed to relate to breaching profit and sustainability regulations tied to historical loans from Guochuan Lai's tenure.

"Many fans in my area are very concerned by reports of a potential points deduction due to allegations of financial rule breaches, which the club strongly rejected," Miss Coombes told the House of Commons. "Given Albion's recent run of seven games unbeaten, keeping us just above the relegation zone, a points deduction sending us down would be heartbreaking for fans, particularly because the source of the issue seems to be a loan from the previous owners."

Government Response and Football Governance Act

In response, Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy thanked Miss Coombes for her question and emphasized the importance of the Football Governance Act, passed in 2025. Ms Nandy, referencing her own experiences with Wigan Athletic, acknowledged the significance of such situations for local communities.

"Can I thank her for that question and having been through some very difficult times with my own superb football club Wigan Athletic I know how much this matters to people in West Brom," Ms Nandy said. "This is precisely why we delivered the Football Governance Act, which clearly sets out the need to protect the integrity and sporting competitiveness of existing competitions and I'm sure they will be looking at this closely."

Details of the Financial Charge

West Bromwich Albion are set for a hearing with the EFL regarding a financial charge related to breaching the three-year profit and sustainability limit of £41.5 million between 2022 and 2025. The discrepancy is believed to center around a £5 million interest payment on two loans taken from US lender MSD Holdings in 2022 and 2023. It is important to note that Shilen Patel's Bilkul takeover was only concluded in February 2024, highlighting the historical nature of the issues.

The legislation under the Football Governance Act aims to protect and promote the sustainability of English football, safeguarding club heritage and competition integrity. Miss Coombes concluded by asking the minister to agree that the situation is awful for fans and to urge a swift resolution.
