Michael O'Neill Sends Sharp Message to Relegation Rivals Over 'Noise'
Blackburn Rovers boss Michael O'Neill has issued a pointed response to the controversy surrounding his dual managerial role ahead of a crucial Championship clash with West Bromwich Albion. The Northern Ireland manager, who was appointed by Rovers until the end of the season, addressed the 'noise' from other clubs threatened by relegation.
Dual Role Sparks Concerns Among Championship Clubs
At least one Championship side raised the issue of O'Neill's dual role with the English Football League this week. Several relegation-threatened clubs had players on international duty with O'Neill's Northern Ireland team, leading to concerns about how many minutes those players would feature.
West Brom's Isaac Price was among those players, though there is no indication that Albion formally complained to the EFL. Speaking ahead of the Bank Holiday Monday match against Blackburn, O'Neill suggested clubs should examine their own performances rather than focusing on external factors.
O'Neill's Blunt Assessment of Relegation Battle
The manager told the Lancashire Telegraph: "Well, I can't affect it anymore. Whatever the accusations were, I find it hard to believe really. But, look, every club that's in this situation, they're in it because it's their own fault and we're no different."
He continued: "We've had 40 games and we're in this situation because of the 40 games that we've played. So are Portsmouth, so are West Brom, so are Leicester, so are Oxford. You can throw Charlton in the mix, but I think they've probably got a little bit of breathing space."
Focus on Self-Improvement Rather Than External Factors
O'Neill emphasized that teams must take responsibility for their positions in the table: "So you have to get yourself out of it. You know what I mean? Not look around you, get yourself out of the situation and that's what we're trying to do. Today was a big lift in that."
With six games remaining in the Championship season, the relegation battle is expected to be extremely tight. O'Neill concluded: "Every team has six games left and it's going to be very, very tight. But our focus, my focus, is just with my team and this group of players and the noise is exactly what you said. That's all it was. It was just noise."
The comments come as Blackburn Rovers prepare for a critical match against West Bromwich Albion, with both teams fighting to secure their Championship status for next season.
