Rugby Training Sessions Cancelled Following Traveller Encampment
Rugby training sessions have been cancelled after travellers established a camp on pitches in Birmingham, disrupting local sports activities. A convoy of caravans and vehicles moved onto the edge of a field off Cole Hall Lane in Shard End, near residential homes, prompting immediate action from the Yardley and District Social Club.
Club Operations Suspended
The Yardley and District Social Club has pulled all scheduled rugby training sessions and will not be opening its clubhouse until further notice. In a statement on their Facebook page, the club expressed sincere apologies for the cancellations, citing the presence of travellers on their rugby pitch as the reason.
Club officials are actively working with Birmingham City Council to facilitate the removal of the encampment and hope to resume normal operations soon. They have committed to keeping the community updated on developments.
Council Response and Previous Incidents
Birmingham City Council has addressed the issue of unauthorised encampments, stating its commitment to protecting council land and taking steps to recover it when encroached upon. The council noted that it maintains usable transit sites and plots for the Gypsy, Roma, and Traveller community, in line with government policy.
This is not the first such incident in the area; travellers have been on the move due to the availability of open green spaces, having previously set up camp on Shard End Park on Friday, April 10. The council's Gypsy and Traveller Accommodation Assessment, updated in 2019, provides further details on available accommodations.
The situation highlights ongoing challenges in balancing community sports activities with the needs of traveller groups, as local authorities and clubs navigate legal and logistical considerations.
