Dion Sanderson Prepares for Birmingham City Return with Derby County
Dion Sanderson will face his former club Birmingham City for the first time since his departure when Derby County hosts a crucial Championship match this weekend. The defender, who was sold to Derby in January, is set to play a key role in a game that could significantly impact Blues' promotion aspirations.
Sanderson's Point to Prove Against Former Club
When asked if he has a point to prove against Birmingham City, Sanderson responded emphatically: "Yes." The 26-year-old quickly elaborated, stating: "Every player has a point to prove. As a team we set our standards really high, it's about getting the job done and finishing on a high."
Sanderson's departure from Birmingham came after he was ruthlessly axed by manager Chris Davies during their League One title-winning campaign. He was subsequently excluded from the first team's pre-season plans last summer, leaving him waiting for a transfer opportunity.
Reunion with Manager John Eustace
The move to Derby County marked Sanderson's fourth Championship club and reunited him with manager John Eustace. Sanderson revealed the transfer almost didn't happen, explaining: "At the start of the window I did have a quick conversation with the gaffer and he was like, 'Listen, I don't think it will happen so crack on...' and I was still waiting for other clubs basically, then towards the end of the window they came in and straight away I was like, 'Yeah, get me there'."
Sanderson has become a key player for Derby, who currently sit four points and one place above Birmingham in the league table. He helped secure a battling 1-0 victory at Portsmouth on Monday night, demonstrating his importance to the Rams' campaign.
Focus on the Match Despite History
Despite the personal significance of facing his former club, Sanderson maintains a professional approach to the upcoming match. He told BBC Radio Derby: "It's just another game in my eyes, another game that we will be looking to get three points in. I don't really have a game where it's like, 'I can't wait to play this', it's about getting the win and moving on."
The defender expressed his admiration for Derby County as a club, stating: "I've always said that even if the manager wasn't here it would still be my first choice. It's such a big club; the fanbase, the history, the environment."
Praise for Manager John Eustace
Sanderson offered high praise for his manager John Eustace, who previously managed Birmingham City before being sacked in October 2023 with the club sixth in the league. "He makes the squad believe we can beat anyone in this league," Sanderson said. "He makes us feel like we could play against Man City and beat them. He has great man management skills."
The defender continued: "He really pinpoints other teams' weaknesses and we try to exploit it. It comes out on a game day, he knows how to fire everyone up. He's proved it at every club he's been at. The positions he's left the club in or finished in have been really good. He's a successful manager in my eyes and a lot would say the same."
Crucial Championship Encounter
This weekend's match represents a significant moment in the Championship season. While Birmingham City began the season as promotion favorites, Derby County have exceeded expectations under Eustace's leadership. The Rams now have a genuine chance of making the play-offs just twelve months after securing survival on the final day of the previous season.
For Sanderson, the game offers an opportunity to demonstrate his worth against the club that let him go, while for Derby, victory could effectively end Birmingham's promotion hopes. The former captain's performance will be closely watched by both sets of supporters in what promises to be a highly charged Championship encounter.
