Youri Tielemans Issues Focus Warning to Aston Villa Ahead of Europa League Clash
Aston Villa midfielder Youri Tielemans has issued a stark warning to his teammates, urging them not to get "carried away" by thoughts of ending the club's long trophy drought as they prepare for a crucial Europa League quarter-final second leg against Bologna. With Villa holding a commanding 3-1 lead from the first leg, Tielemans emphasized the importance of maintaining focus on the immediate task at hand rather than looking ahead to potential semi-finals or silverware.
Learning from Past Setbacks
Tielemans highlighted recent disappointments as a cautionary tale, referencing Villa's semi-final exits in the 2024 Conference League and the FA Cup last year. He stressed that while winning is the ultimate goal, players must avoid fixating on the end result. "You play to win it, that's my mentality and the mentality for many players in the squad," Tielemans said. "But when you get there, you play as well as you can and try not to think about the end moment. That is where you can get carried away sometimes. We need to play as we're doing and win these games."
Addressing Slow Starts and Building Momentum
The Belgian international acknowledged Villa's sluggish start in the first leg against Bologna, where the Italian side had a goal disallowed by VAR and hit the bar before Ezri Konsa scored just before halftime. Tielemans attributed part of the slow performance to Villa's first match in 18 days but conceded improvements are needed. "Maybe you could say Bologna were unlucky, but last week was our first game back, and you have to take that into consideration," he explained. "It's always about getting back into rhythm, playing together, being used to playing together. We had a bit of a slow start in the first half, but we worked really hard on keeping that line, and it paid off. Tomorrow, we can't have that."
Injury Updates and Squad Fitness
On a positive note, Villa's squad is nearing full fitness ahead of the match. Key players Emi Martinez and Tyrone Mings, who missed the recent draw with Nottingham Forest due to injuries, have returned to training. Jadon Sancho is also back available after recovering from a shoulder injury. In contrast, Bologna will be without defender Jhon Lucumi, who is suspended after receiving a yellow card in the first leg. Tielemans, who has started the last two matches following his own injury return, expressed confidence in the team's condition. "We are firing, we are all fit, and hopefully, we can all stay fit. That is the main goal. I am sure if we are, then our heads and mentalities are moving in the right direction."
Season Goals and Final Push
With just over five weeks left in the season, Villa have multiple objectives in sight. Beyond Europa League glory, they are well-positioned to secure a top-five finish in the Premier League, which could guarantee Champions League football next season. Tielemans reflected on the team's current form, stating, "We can feel we are in a good moment. We have some momentum, playing for the highest places in the Premier League and a quarter-final of the Europa League. We are aware of where we are. We know our qualities, and we deserve to be there because we worked hard for it and got some really good results. It's a good time for us, and we want to keep it until the end of the season."
