Aston Villa's Europa League Triumph: McGinn's Return and Watkins' Goal Seal Victory
Aston Villa secured their sixth consecutive win in the Europa League by defeating Lille 1-0 in France, taking a slender advantage back to Villa Park for the second leg of the round of 16 tie. Ollie Watkins' header on the hour mark proved decisive, separating the teams in a tightly contested match at the Stade Pierre Mauroy.
While it's only halftime in the tie, Villa's narrow victory must serve as the foundation to complete the job next Thursday and advance to the quarter-finals. Here are the key talking points from Villa's impressive win in France.
McGinn's Return Provides Major Boost for Villa
One of the most significant positives from Villa's trip to Lille was the return of captain John McGinn. The skipper had been sorely missed over the past two months since sustaining a knee injury against Everton in January.
In McGinn's absence, Villa have lacked leadership on the pitch and his energy both in midfield and the dressing room. Although Villa were playing away, his return could also uplift the home form at Villa Park next week, with the standards he sets helping to boost the atmosphere.
McGinn entered the match for the final 15 minutes, replacing Douglas Luiz in the double pivot alongside Amadou Onana. During his brief appearance, he had 13 touches of the ball, successfully completed all seven passes he attempted, and won two ground duels.
After full-time, with travelling Villa fans held back in their section, McGinn came out for his warm-down, which included at least 10 runs the length of the pitch. He received a brilliant reception from supporters, who chanted 'Super John McGinn' and cheered his return to the penalty box after each run.
As he completed one of his final runs, McGinn jokingly fell over on his way back—a moment that must have briefly alarmed away fans given his importance to the team. Upon getting back to his feet, McGinn pointed to the penalty spot, amusing the supporters packed above him in the away section.
Villa Must Capitalize on Advantage to Reach Quarter-Finals
There's a long way to go before Villa can contemplate a potential trip to Italy in the quarter-finals. However, failing to progress from this position after establishing a one-goal lead would represent a terrible way to exit European competition.
This Lille team is nowhere near as strong as the side that took Villa all the way in the Conference League quarter-finals two years ago. After failing to score against Villa, it's now just two matches in twenty where Lille have scored more than once.
Indeed, Lille have also failed to score in six matches since the start of the calendar year and clearly struggle for quality in the final third. Even Olivier Giroud—who has scored more goals against Villa than any other team in his career—passed up a presentable chance at the front post at the end of the first half.
That opportunity represented Lille's best opening of the game, as they were also caught offside on several occasions in both halves. Villa should have scored at least once more after Watkins' opener, which remains the disappointment from the night.
Lille opened up in search of an equalizer, which played into Villa's hands. In the second leg, the French side will have to play on the front foot, allowing Villa to exploit space in behind their defense.
Watkins Ends Goal Drought with Crucial Header
Ollie Watkins desperately needed that goal. The images of relief on his face when he scored against Chelsea—only for it to be ruled out by VAR—would have been bitterly frustrating for the striker.
Watkins often plays on confidence, and it's no coincidence that he scored a week later after at least feeling like he had broken his duck. Granted, VAR disallowed the goal, but—just like Tammy Abraham after he thought he had scored against Brentford—that moment can ignite the determination to find the net soon after.
Abraham, of course, then scored in successive matches against Newcastle and Leeds. Watkins has now celebrated two goals in his last couple of matches, which is certainly something to build upon.
It often feels like whenever Villa's team news is released, many comments question his involvement—and at times he has been rightly criticized this season. Yet if he can find the goals to fire Villa into the last eight of the Europa League and keep the club on track for a top-five finish before the final months of the season, he could quickly become one of the team's form players.
Manager Unai Emery needs more goals from across the team, not just Watkins, with players like Rogers, Buendia, and Sancho all struggling in recent weeks. Watkins was replaced by Abraham in the 77th minute, with chants of his name ringing out from the away supporters housed high in the Stade Pierre Mauroy.
Konsa Highlights Clean Sheet as Key Positive
Ezri Konsa has been under scrutiny recently, particularly following Villa's defeat at Wolves and the poor defending that ensued—though this was a collective issue rather than any individual's fault. He returned to his best performance levels against Lille, helping Pau Torres in the heart of defense keep pressure off goalkeeper Emi Martinez.
"It hasn't been a good couple of months for us," Konsa admitted on TNT Sports after the win. "We didn't get the results that we wanted. We knew how important today was, and that we needed to win."
"We played here a couple of seasons ago and knew how tough it would be. For me, the main thing was keeping a clean sheet, as that's something we've struggled to do in the last few games."
He added: "We're not going to get too happy because we know that there is a second leg to play for and we have to focus on that and finish the job."
Konsa continued: "We had eight days leading up to this game, so we had time to prepare and refresh our minds, forgetting about the Premier League for a bit. This game is done and we have another big one on Sunday. In football there are always ups and downs. Hopefully this is the start of another run."
When asked about McGinn's return, Konsa said: "Having Ginny back is huge for us. He plays a huge role for us, he is our captain and hopefully he can stay fit for the rest of the season."
