West Brom Boss James Morrison Outlines Expectations for Midfielder Jayson Molumby's Discipline
West Bromwich Albion head coach James Morrison has been speaking about one of his midfield mainstays, Jayson Molumby, as the team prepares to resume their battle for Championship survival. Morrison has urged the Republic of Ireland international to channel his energy and passion in the right way, emphasizing the importance of discipline on the pitch.
Molumby's Role in Albion's Recent Form
The 26-year-old midfielder has played a significant role in the Baggies' recent upturn in form, which has been crucial in their hunt to avoid relegation from the Championship. However, the first half of Molumby's season was hampered by a frustrating injury spell, and like many of his Hawthorns colleagues, he has struggled for consistency across the campaign.
Molumby will reunite with his club colleagues today in preparation for the return of Championship action, with Wrexham set to visit The Hawthorns. This match marks a key moment in Albion's survival bid, and Morrison is keen to see his players, including Molumby, perform at their best.
Morrison's Direct Advice to Molumby
"I've asked Jayson to be disciplined, use his energy in the right way," head coach Morrison stated. "Sometimes Jayson can get carried away wanting to do everything, but he's got to remember he's a midfield player."
Morrison highlighted Molumby's performance in the last game against Bristol City as an example of what he expects. "I thought in the last game he was excellent. He had a good balance, he was disciplined when he needed to be and he picked the right times to get forward."
He added, "Jayson is a very good technical player, but I think he can show more of what he is." This comment underscores Morrison's belief in Molumby's potential, while also pushing him to improve his on-field decision-making.
Molumby's International Experience and Passion
Recently, Molumby won his latest two caps for Ireland but suffered agonising heartbreak as the nation were denied a World Cup ticket this summer, losing on penalties to Czechia. The Albion man even cracked the post during the match, adding to the disappointment.
The battling midfielder earned his 34th cap with an hour in Tuesday's goalless friendly against North Macedonia, after which he described the experience as "really tough" and a "rollercoaster". This international duty has kept him busy during the break, but Morrison is confident in handling him.
"I know him deep down, I've known him a long time and I know how to deal with him," Morrison continued. "He's very passionate. I love that about Jayson, that's who he is and he can continue it for however long it will be."
Past Discipline Issues and Future Focus
Molumby has, at times, let his frustration or emotion boil over, resulting in three red cards during his Albion career. He was also involved in incidents such as Kyle Bartley's red card after full-time last season and a pre-season punch-up against Mallorca.
These past issues highlight the need for the discipline Morrison is advocating. As West Brom faces a critical period in the Championship, with survival at stake, the coach's message is clear: Molumby's passion is an asset, but it must be harnessed effectively to benefit the team.
With the upcoming match against Wrexham, all eyes will be on Molumby to see if he can balance his energetic style with the tactical discipline required at this level. Morrison's guidance could be key in helping the midfielder shine and contribute to Albion's efforts to secure their Championship status.
