A Storied Career at The Hawthorns
Tony Godden joined West Bromwich Albion in 1977 from non-league Ashford Town, succeeding the legendary John Osborne as the club's goalkeeper. Over nine years, he made an impressive 329 appearances, becoming a firm favourite among supporters. His consistency was unmatched, as he still holds the club record for 228 consecutive appearances, a testament to his durability and skill between the sticks.
Godden made his debut at Tottenham's White Hart Lane in March 1977, keeping a clean sheet in a 2-0 victory. He followed this with another clean sheet in his home debut at The Hawthorns, a 4-0 win over Ipswich Town that featured a hat-trick from Bryan Robson. During his tenure, Albion achieved notable finishes in the First Division, including seventh, sixth, third, and fourth places, marking a period of excitement and success for the club.
Key Contributions and Later Career
As Albion's number one goalkeeper, Godden was an ever-present figure from the 1977/78 season under managers Ronnie Allen and Ron Atkinson. He played a crucial role in the club's memorable FA Cup and UEFA Cup runs, showcasing his talent on both domestic and European stages. After his time with West Brom, Godden had loan spells at Luton Town, Walsall, and Chelsea before making a permanent move to Chelsea in 1986.

Godden later represented Birmingham City, Bury, Peterborough United, and non-league Wivenhoe Town before retiring in 1991. Post-retirement, he managed non-league sides Kings Lynn and Bury Town in the 1990s and served as a goalkeeper coach at Rushden & Diamonds and Brighton & Hove Albion, where he also had caretaker managerial roles.
