A new survey has revealed that nine out of ten UK homeowners are planning to dine alfresco this summer, signaling a continued boom in outdoor living. The research, conducted by a leading garden furniture retailer, found that 90% of respondents intend to eat outside at least once a week during the warmer months.
Garden Upgrades on the Rise
The study, which polled 2,000 homeowners across the country, indicates a surge in garden improvements. Nearly half of those surveyed (48%) said they have already upgraded their outdoor space in preparation for summer, with 37% investing in new dining sets and 29% purchasing new barbecues or grills. According to the retailer, sales of outdoor dining furniture have increased by 25% compared to last year.
Why Alfresco Dining Is Popular
The trend is driven by a desire to make the most of home spaces, with 62% of respondents saying they enjoy eating outdoors because it feels like a holiday. Another 54% cited the health benefits of fresh air, while 41% said it is a cost-effective way to entertain guests. The research also found that 33% of homeowners plan to host more garden parties this summer than in previous years.
Regional Variations
Interest in alfresco dining varies by region. Londoners are the most enthusiastic, with 95% planning to eat outside, followed by those in the South East (92%) and the North West (89%). In the Midlands, 87% of homeowners said they will dine alfresco this summer. The least keen were in Scotland, where 78% plan to do so, likely due to less reliable weather.
Expert Insights
According to a spokesperson for the retailer, “The pandemic has permanently changed how we view our outdoor spaces. People have realised that gardens are an extension of their home, and they want to make them comfortable and stylish. Alfresco dining is no longer a rare treat; it’s a regular part of British summer life.”
Impact on Retail and Economy
The trend is boosting the garden furniture market, which is expected to grow by 12% this year. Retailers report strong demand for dining sets, parasols, and outdoor lighting. The survey also found that 22% of homeowners plan to spend more than £500 on their garden this summer, with the average spend projected at £320. This spending spree is providing a welcome boost to the economy, particularly for small businesses and local garden centres.
Tips for Creating the Perfect Alfresco Setup
Experts recommend investing in comfortable seating, weather-resistant materials, and ambient lighting to make the most of outdoor dining. A well-prepared garden can increase property value by up to 10%, according to estate agents. Homeowners are also advised to consider shade solutions, such as pergolas or umbrellas, and to stock up on insect repellent for evening meals.
