James Morrison's Clear Message to West Brom Players as Survival Line Approaches
West Bromwich Albion's resurgent form has brought the Championship safety line within sight, and head coach James Morrison has issued a straightforward request to his squad: keep the focus firmly on football.
Silencing Distractions Amid Promotion Push
The interim boss, who will remain in charge until the season concludes, has emphasized the importance of letting performances do the talking. This comes as the club navigates the uncertainty of a pending EFL charge that could potentially result in a points deduction.
"Our main focus was just to concentrate on the game and to do our jobs," Morrison stated, reflecting on the recent 2-0 victory at Preston North End. "It was a highly-pressurised game like that and we came out with three points and that's what we wanted to do."
Critical Clash with Watford Looms
Albion welcome mid-table Watford to The Hawthorns on Tuesday evening. The Hornets arrive winless in their last five matches, presenting a golden opportunity for West Brom. A victory for Morrison's side, combined with Oxford United dropping points elsewhere, would mathematically secure Championship status—barring any potential sanctions from the EFL.
Morrison has actively banned discussions of the charge at the training ground, insisting the squad must control what they can. "I've quashed (charge talk) all week and will continue to," he affirmed. "The football is doing its talking and that's the way it should be. We've got no control over it so we will do our talking on the pitch."
Unbeaten Run Fuels Confidence
The Baggies are currently enjoying an impressive eight-match unbeaten streak. Saturday's triumph at Deepdale extended their cushion above the relegation zone to five points, significantly boosting morale within the camp.
"We've been concentrating on our jobs in training because matches are big enough without anything else," Morrison added. "I've been really pleased with our energy around the week, on the training pitch, the lads are connecting. I've no qualms about it being any different."
A Plea for Football-First Narrative
Morrison's core message revolves around reclaiming the narrative. "You felt it on Saturday," he noted. "The talk was on our performance and we have to quieten down anything else. We want people to come here and talk to us about playing football and not other stuff. I want everyone going home happy."
With a quick turnaround before the Watford fixture, the head coach is demanding back-to-back wins. "We're in this position and we want to go back-to-back wins. We strive for the winning feeling," he concluded, underscoring the squad's determination to secure their fate through results alone.
