The hit BBC revival of Gladiators is ramping up the action for its third series, introducing a second brand-new, high-stakes event designed to test contenders like never before.
New 'Everest' Challenge Takes Competition to New Heights
Following the debut of the 'Destruction' event last Saturday, the upcoming episode on January 24 will feature the introduction of 'Everest'. This intense challenge will see a contender and a Gladiator face off while suspended on a platform 21 feet above the arena floor. Separated by a large barrier, their goal is to push their opponent off as the platform tilts, demanding immense balance, strength, and strategy.
'Bigger, Bolder, and a Well-Oiled Machine'
Presenter Bradley Walsh, 65, expressed his excitement about the new additions to the gameshow's lineup. He confirmed there are three new events in total for this season, each designed to raise the stakes significantly.
"We've got three new events that really raise the stakes, testing both the Gladiators and contenders in completely different ways," said Walsh. "There are definitely a few surprises in store, with some unbelievable edge-of-your-seat moments. With series three, it's bigger, bolder and runs like a well-oiled machine."
His co-presenter and son, Barney Walsh, 28, added an intriguing note, revealing that while two events are completely fresh, one is actually "the return of an original" classic from the show's past, stating: "I think people will be glad to have it back."
A Legacy of Athletic Competition
The current BBC series, which first launched in 2024, is the second revival of the iconic competition. The original ITV show ran for eight years until 2000, before a shorter Sky revival from 2008 to 2009.
The format pits everyday contestants against the show's elite athletes – the Gladiators – in tests of speed, power, endurance, and agility. The current roster of Gladiators for this series includes Apollo, Athena, Bionic, Comet, Cyclone, Diamond, Dynamite, Electro, Fire, Fury, The Giant, Hammer, Legend, Nitro, Phantom, Sabre, Steel, and Viper.
The first of the three new events, Destruction, aired on Saturday, January 17th. It involved two contenders racing against one Gladiator down lanes featuring four 8-foot barriers they must smash through. The first to break through all barriers and hit a final button claims victory.
Viewers can catch the next explosive episode, featuring the debut of 'Everest', on BBC One and iPlayer on Saturday, January 24.
