Football fans and collectors are being offered a unique chance to own a foundational piece of the sport's history. The original, life-size pencil design sketch for the iconic FA Cup trophy is to be sold at auction for the first time, with a pre-sale estimate of between £20,000 and £30,000.
A Century-Old Piece of Sporting Heritage
The historic drawing, which measures 65cm by 42cm (80cm x 60cm framed), is inscribed "THE ORIGINAL DESIGN FOR THE ENGLISH FOOTBALL ASSOCIATION CUP". It is signed and dated by the artist from the renowned firm Fattorini & Sons. The design was created after the company won a competition in 1911, beating around 150 other entrants to create a new trophy for The Football Association.
For more than a hundred years, this priceless piece of paper has been preserved within the Fattorini family. Its upcoming sale marks its first ever appearance on the open market, offering an unprecedented opportunity for acquisition.
The Design That Defined a Trophy
The Fattorini design first came to life as a physical trophy in 1911 and remained the official FA Cup for the next eight decades. Its classic shape became synonymous with footballing success until 1991, when general wear and tear necessitated the creation of an identical replica.
That replica was itself replaced in 2014 by a solid silver version crafted by Thomas Lyte, which faithfully adhered to the original 1911 specifications laid out in the very sketch now being auctioned.
Bidding for a Football Icon
The auction will be handled by BUDDS Auctions, with the sale scheduled for February 11. David Convery of BUDDS Auctions expressed the significance of the lot, stating it represents "the very icon of British football success" and is surrounded by "all the romance and passion that is such a beloved and essential part of the game".
