Runners and families in South Wales are gearing up for a popular community event that offers both a competitive challenge and inclusive fun. The Pontypool 10k Home Run and the accompanying 2k Family Fun Run are scheduled to take place on Sunday, February 15, within the scenic grounds of Pontypool Park.
A Scenic Challenge for Runners of All Levels
Organisers describe the Pontypool 10k Home Run as an ideal benchmark event for the year, catering to seasoned athletes, returning runners, and complete beginners alike. The event promises a warm welcome and professional chip timing for all participants.
Sponsored by the Mamhilad Park Estate, the race will begin at 10 am. The entry fee is set at £22 per person. The route starts and finishes in the beautiful Pontypool Park, taking runners on a picturesque journey. The first section features some undulating terrain before levelling out towards Mamhilad.
A short climb then leads participants to the tranquil Mon and Brecon canal, offering a chance to enjoy the views before tackling the final couple of miles. The last mile is rolling, culminating in a finish through the park's large iconic metal gates and a slight climb to the line.
Runners will benefit from a fully marshalled course with signage, first aid support, a compere named Daryl, water stations, and free car parking. All finishers will receive a medal, with various prizes awarded across age categories.
Family-Friendly Fun for Everyone
For those seeking a less strenuous but equally enjoyable experience, the 2k Family Fun Run begins just after the 10k, at 10:10 am. Also sponsored by Mamhilad Park Estate, this event is designed for all ages and abilities.
With entry starting from just £3 per person, the fun run showcases some of Pontypool Park's best features, including the bandstand, pond, clock tower, orchard, and maze. Organisers have confirmed that pushchairs are welcome, allowing the whole family to participate. Please note that children under eight years old must be accompanied by an adult throughout the event. Every entrant will receive a commemorative medal.
Supporting a Vital Local Cause
Both events are organised to raise crucial funds for St David's Hospice Care. Donations and sponsorship generated will directly support the hospice's work in providing care and fulfilling final wishes for those in need.
Participants are encouraged to raise sponsorship, with organisers suggesting that setting up a JustGiving page is the easiest method. They state it takes just five minutes, and sharing the page can quickly generate vital income. Alternatively, individuals can make a direct donation via the St David's Hospice Care website.
Whether you're seeking a personal fitness challenge, affordable family entertainment, or a way to contribute to monthly fundraising, these events in Pontypool, Torfaen, offer an opportunity for the whole community to get involved.
