Former Manchester United striker Dwight Yorke has expressed confidence in Birmingham City's ability to secure promotion to the Premier League, as the club aims to end a 15-year absence from the top flight. Birmingham City last played in the Premier League in 2011, and Yorke, who had a brief stint with the club during the 2004/05 season, believes the Championship offers opportunities for any team to succeed.
Yorke's Championship Experience
Yorke, who won the Championship title with Sunderland in 2007, highlighted the league's unpredictability. He noted that despite the financial advantages of relegated teams like West Ham, Wolves, and Burnley, other clubs can still triumph. "The Championship is always open for anyone to come and win it," Yorke told Boyle Sports. "I look back to my experience as a player in the Championship to realise how that league operates, and everybody has a genuine chance from top to bottom."
Underdog Success Stories
Yorke pointed to Coventry City's recent success under Frank Lampard as an example. "They defied the odds last year under Frank Lampard and anybody in this league with a decent squad and a good manager can get themselves promoted," he said. He also recalled his own experience with Sunderland, where the team climbed from 23rd place to win the league by April. "That tells you everything," Yorke added.
Birmingham City's Prospects
Yorke urged Birmingham City and other clubs to believe in their chances. "It doesn't matter who you are, or who you play for, if you put your mind and soul into it, the Championship will reward you," he said. He also mentioned Wrexham and Blackburn Rovers as potential contenders, noting that Birmingham has previously played in the top flight. With the addition of two extra playoff places, Yorke believes teams have more opportunities than ever to achieve promotion.
