M5 Motorway 50mph Speed Limit to Last Three Years for Repairs
M5 Motorway 50mph Speed Limit for Three Years

A major Midlands motorway is set to impose a 50mph speed limit for the next three years, impacting over 100,000 drivers daily. The M5 near junction 21 for Weston-Super-Mare will undergo essential repairs on St Georges Bridge, requiring a contraflow system with only three lanes open in each direction.

Details of the Scheme

The 50 million pound project involves lifting the bridge 72 times to replace bearings underneath. Works have already commenced, with the speed limit expected from autumn 2026 until late 2029. National Highways warns of potential delays, advising drivers to allow extra time, especially during peak hours.

Why the Work Is Necessary

Terry Robinson, Engineering Lead for National Highways, stated: "Many of our motorways and major A-roads were built around 60 years ago and need renewing to remain fit for purpose. St Georges Bridge is heavily used and requires significant work to ensure driver safety." The refurbished bridge will last longer and reduce future maintenance needs.

Additional Improvements

National Highways will also add a second merge lane onto the M5 to help reduce congestion. Trains will continue to run underneath the bridge using specialized scaffolding during the repairs.
