Watch the nail-biting moment as Warwickshire Police escorted its largest item ever — a colossal 430-tonne load the size of "two blue whales" — through the tiny streets of a Midlands town.
Massive Rotor Stator Transported Through Rugby
On May 16, a huge rotor stator destined for the UK national electricity grid was carefully manoeuvred through the middle of Rugby. Measuring 81 metres in length and nearly seven metres wide, the intimidating metal load was pulled around tight corners, drawing attention from onlookers.
This operation marked the largest item ever escorted by Warwickshire Police. A force spokesperson stated: "A couple of weeks back, the Abnormal Loads team escorted a 430-tonne, 81-metre-long, and nearly seven-metre-wide package through the middle of Rugby. For animal fans — that's about two blue whales carrying a small herd of elephants on their back."
Part of National Grid Infrastructure
The colossal metal monolith is a rotor stator to be used as part of the national electricity grid. It is one of several such items the team will be helping to negotiate through Warwickshire. The spokesperson added: "It holds the honour of being the largest thing our team has ever escorted."
Video footage shows the transport vehicle delicately threading its way through a street in Rugby, highlighting the precision required for such an operation.
Role of the Abnormal Loads Team
"Our Abnormal Loads team are an essential part of moving anything oversized through the road network, where there might be a requirement for traffic management or even road closures to keep things moving," the spokesperson explained. "There is a limit to how large a vehicle can be before it's required to travel with a police escort."
Other items transported over recent years include enormous tunnel borers, and the team is currently moving massive concrete bridge beams daily. "So far, no actual blue whales — but rest assured, we'll be ready when the time comes," the spokesperson joked.
