Sutton Coldfield sinkhole causes main road closure and chaos
Sutton Coldfield sinkhole shuts main road, causes chaos

A significant sinkhole has appeared on Walmley Road in Sutton Coldfield, leading to the closure of the main road in both directions while investigations and repairs are underway. The sinkhole developed near the entrance to Sutton Coldfield Rugby Club on the evening of Thursday, May 14.

Residents Take Action

Initially, one lane was closed, but as traffic passed, the road surface began to move, revealing a large gap beneath described as capable of fitting several people. The entire road was then shut. Residents used a ladder to cover the hole and obtained barriers from the rugby club to protect the site and warn motorists.

Newly elected city councillor John Perks (Con) praised the residents for their quick thinking, saying they prevented what could have been a major accident. He noted that the closure exacerbates issues on nearby Fox Hollies Road, where temporary traffic lights are in place for gas works until June 19.

Council and Severn Trent Response

Birmingham City Council stated that initial investigations indicate a collapsed foul sewer caused the sinkhole. Responsibility has been handed to Severn Trent, who have taken over the response. The council described the issue as critical, given Walmley Road is a key route linking the A38 to Walmley Village, Good Hope Hospital, and Asda Minworth.

Severn Trent confirmed they were informed on Friday, May 15, and implemented the road closure for safety. Repairs are scheduled to begin on Saturday, May 16, with completion expected early next week. The One Network road repair website initially listed the issue from May 15 to June 1, but Severn Trent aims to finish sooner.

Coun Perks highlighted the community spirit shown by residents and called for improved road repairs across the city. He described the sinkhole as a cavern underneath the road, emphasizing the danger it posed to vehicles.
