Aberdeen's New 20mph Speed Limits Spark Driver Backlash
Motorists in Aberdeen are waking up to a new reality this week as £100 fines and three penalty points are now being enforced for those breaking recently introduced 20mph speed limits. The controversial measures, implemented by Aberdeen City Council across residential areas, have drawn significant criticism from drivers who label the policy as completely bonkers.
Council Defends Road Safety Initiative
Council Co-Leader Councillor Ian Yuill has strongly defended the decision, stating that pedestrians are among the most vulnerable on our streets. He emphasised that reduced vehicle speeds would lead to fewer serious injuries to pedestrians, making Aberdeen's streets safer for everyone.
Councillor Miranda Radley provided stark statistics to support the policy, explaining that if a motorist hits someone at 30mph, they are seven times more likely to die than if the incident occurred at 20mph. She expressed pleasure that Aberdeen City Council was playing its part in achieving national road safety goals through these measures.
Motorists Voice Fury Over 'Cash Grab'
The implementation has sparked outrage among local drivers, with many taking to social media to express their frustration. One angry motorist described the scheme as pointless nonsense and criticised the council for wasting money on signs that most people would ignore.
Another driver questioned the logic behind the blanket approach, suggesting speeds were already self-controlled within 30mph limits depending on traffic conditions. They also raised environmental concerns, arguing that keeping cars in lower gears for longer will cause more pollution, directly contradicting Low Emission Zone objectives.
The debate continues as Aberdeen residents adjust to the new speed restrictions, with the council maintaining its position that the measures will save lives while drivers grapple with the financial and practical implications of the changes.
