An urgent amber weather alert has been issued for the UK, prompting serious safety advice for motorists as Storm Claudia prepares to strike. The warning, which is set to be active from midday on Friday, has led to specific guidance for drivers, particularly in areas like Birmingham which are expected to be heavily impacted.
The Essential Nine-Point Checklist
To help drivers navigate the potentially dangerous conditions, the Met Office has compiled a crucial list of nine items that should be packed in your vehicle before the storm arrives. Ensuring you have these essentials could be the difference between a minor inconvenience and a serious emergency.
The recommended items are: an in-car phone charger, warm clothes, blankets, high-visibility clothing, jump leads, an empty fuel can, food and drink, a shovel, and warning triangles.
Regarding the warning triangles, motorists are advised that ideally two should be used – one for the front and one for the rear of the vehicle. For maximum safety, these signs need to be positioned at least 45 metres away from your car to effectively alert other drivers if you break down.
Expert Driving Advice for Severe Weather
Chris Wood, the AA Patrol of the Year, has emphasised that the first step for any driver should be to question if their journey is absolutely necessary. If travel is unavoidable, he strongly recommends using main roads, which are less prone to hazards like fallen branches and debris.
His essential tips for driving in high winds include keeping both hands on the steering wheel and reducing your speed. He also warns drivers to be extra cautious in areas with gaps between trees, buildings, or bridges, as these spots are more exposed to dangerous side winds.
Planning Ahead for a Safer Journey
Further practical advice from the AA includes allowing plenty of extra time for your journey, as travel will likely take longer than usual. Drivers must also ensure their vehicles have plenty of fuel or, for electric vehicles (EVs), a full electrical charge.
Finally, Chris Wood stresses the importance of technology in staying safe. "Ensure your mobile phone is fully charged and download the AA app and what3words to help us get to you faster if the worst should happen," he advised. This preparation ensures that help can be dispatched efficiently and accurately in case of an emergency during the storm.
