Police in Birmingham have arrested a man on suspicion of drink or drug driving following a crash that forced road closures and bus diversions in the city centre.
Crash Causes Chaos and Cordon
The incident occurred on Jennens Road in Aston at approximately 10.40am on Sunday, January 4. According to West Midlands Police, a car collided with a box containing electrical equipment, prompting a significant emergency response.
Officers swiftly arrested a man at the scene on suspicion of being unfit to drive through drink or drugs. The suspect was subsequently taken to hospital for assessment.
Travel Disruption for Bus Services
The crash and the need to make the damaged electrical equipment safe led to immediate travel disruption. A police cordon was erected around the site, blocking the road.
From around 11.15am, key bus services operated by National Express were forced to divert. The affected services were:
- Number 94
- Number 95
- Number 14
These buses were rerouted via James Watt Queensway and Dartmouth Middleway. National Express issued a public apology for the inconvenience caused by the diversion.
Public Urged to Avoid the Area
West Midlands Police issued a clear warning to motorists following the police incident. A spokesperson stated: "A cordon is in place while the electrical equipment is made safe, and drivers are urged to avoid the area."
The force advised people to steer clear of Jennens Road while recovery and safety work continued throughout Sunday.
