Second child dies after A30 crash in Cornwall

A five-year-old boy has tragically died following a multi-vehicle crash on the A30 in Cornwall, bringing the total number of fatalities from the incident to two children from the same car.

The collision occurred on the westbound carriageway of the A30 near Connor Downs on Friday, May 29. Emergency services were called to the scene at around 11am, where an eight-year-old boy was found with fatal injuries and pronounced dead at the roadside.

The second boy, aged five, was rushed to Bristol Children's Hospital with serious injuries but sadly died on Tuesday, June 2, police confirmed.

Others injured in crash

Both boys were travelling in the same car alongside two women. A woman in her 70s is being treated at Derriford Hospital for serious injuries, while a woman in her 40s has been discharged from the same hospital after receiving treatment.

A local man in his 60s was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and causing serious injury by dangerous driving. He was treated for minor injuries and has since been released under investigation, according to a spokesperson for Devon and Cornwall Police.

Police appeal for witnesses

Detective Inspector Andy Heath of the Devon and Cornwall Police Serious Collisions Investigation Team expressed his sadness at the second child's death. He urged the public to respect the family's privacy and appealed for any witnesses with dash-cam footage to come forward.

“I am saddened to confirm that a second boy has passed away following Friday’s collision on the A30,” Heath said. “It is important that the family are given the privacy needed at this difficult time and my thoughts remain with them and others affected by this tragic incident.”

He added: “Investigators continue to support the relatives while we secure the evidence required in this case. I would like to thank those who have responded to our witness appeals this week and ask that any witness who has not yet contacted us or anyone with relevant dash-cam to please call 101 or make contact via our website quoting 50260136471.”

Relatives of the victims are being supported by specially trained officers. The investigation into the crash remains ongoing.
